Illinois secured two 4-3 victories over Clemson and Notre Dame in their first home dual matches of the spring at Atkins Tennis Center. Kenta Miyoshi clinched the win against Clemson with a three-set decision at No. 1 singles, while William Mroz sealed the victory over Notre Dame at No. 2 singles.
The Illini improved to a 4-2 record for the season, handing Clemson its first loss and bringing Notre Dame's record to 8-2. Head coach Brad Dancer remarked on the challenge faced by his team: "That was a great test for our guys today against two really good teams." He noted the need for improvement in doubles but praised his players' composure in singles play.
In their match against Clemson, Illinois overcame an initial deficit after losing the doubles point. Jeremy Zhang evened the score with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles, followed by Tyler Bowers' victory at No. 4 singles. Mathis Debru added another win at No. 6 singles before Miyoshi secured the final point in a tiebreaker.
Against Notre Dame, Illinois again trailed after doubles but leveled the match with Debru's straight-set victory at No. 6 singles. Zach Viiala and Miyoshi extended Illinois' lead before Notre Dame tied it up with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Mroz completed his comeback in three sets to clinch Illinois' second win of the day.
The Illini will host Michigan next Saturday, February 22, for a nonconference match.
