Illini women's tennis sweeps Iowa State in decisive home victory

The Fighting Illini women's tennis team secured a decisive 4-0 victory against Iowa State at the Atkins Tennis Center, improving their season record to 3-5. The Illinois team captured the doubles point and followed up with singles victories in the No. 5, 6, and 1 positions to clinch the match.

Illinois is currently navigating a challenging schedule, featuring nine consecutive matches against Power 4 opponents. Despite losing on the top doubles court, Illinois' pairs succeeded in winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, both by scores of 6-2. Alice Xu and Violeta Martinez moved up to No. 2 doubles for the first time this season, securing their second straight victory and bringing their overall record to 4-1. McKenna Schaefbauer and Kasia Treiber also triumphed in their first appearance at No. 3 doubles, improving to a dual match record of 4-4.

In singles play, Illinois won five out of six opening sets. Treiber claimed her second win of the day with a commanding 6-0, 6-4 result at No. 5 singles, extending Illinois' lead to 2-0.

Alice Xu quickly followed with a dominant performance at No. 6 singles, winning her match 6-0, 6-1 in her first singles appearance since the spring opener at Notre Dame.

McKenna Schaefbauer clinched the overall victory for Illinois by defeating her No.70-ranked opponent on the top court. Despite trailing early in both sets, Schaefbauer rallied to secure a win with scores of 6-1 and 6-2.

Schaefbauer's success against ranked opponents continues as she improves to a record of four wins against such competitors this season.

FINAL SCORE: ILLINOIS (3-5) defeated IOWA STATE (4-2) with a scoreline of four matches to zero.

The next challenge for Illinois comes on Saturday when they host No.22 Baylor as part of a triple-header event with the men's team at Atkins Tennis Center.
