Illinois baseball is set to commence its 146th season with a three-game series against Abilene Christian at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas. The games will take place from February 14-16, marking the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Illini return 17 players from their 2024 Big Ten champion team and welcome 18 newcomers, including 13 transfers and five freshmen. Illinois head coach Dan Hartleb enters his 20th season, having amassed 567 wins and leading the team to multiple championships and NCAA appearances.
"Illinois begins its 146th season of play this weekend with a three-game series against Abilene Christian," according to the team's announcement. Right-handed pitcher Tyler Schmitt will start on Friday, followed by Ben Plumley on Saturday and Julius Sanchez on Sunday.
Abilene Christian finished last season with a record of 33-23 and returns key players such as Benjamin Greer and Brett Lanman. "Abilene Christian finished the 2024 season with a 33-23 record," highlighting their performance in WAC play.
The Illini's success last year included setting a new program record for home runs with 104, which was also the highest among Big Ten teams. They are looking to build on this momentum as they begin their new campaign.
The games will be streamed live on FloSports, while Scott Beatty will provide commentary via WDWS AM-1400. Illinois aims to continue its strong performance at Whataburger Field, where it has played previously in both the 2017 and 2022 seasons.
Following this series, Illinois will travel to San Marcos for another set of games against Texas State from February 21-23.
