Illinois falls to Rutgers despite strong performances from key players

No. 23 Illinois faced a setback on the road against Rutgers, losing 82-73 at Jersey Mike's Arena in Piscataway, New Jersey. Will Riley led Illinois with 18 points, scoring 11 of those from beyond the arc in the second half. He also contributed six assists and three rebounds.

Morez Johnson Jr. added 11 points, five rebounds, and an assist to his performance, marking his seventh double-figure scoring game this season. Ben Humrichous came off the bench to score 14 points, including three 3-pointers, while collecting five rebounds.

Kylan Boswell recorded six points, ten rebounds, and four steals for Illinois. Tomislav Ivisic scored nine points along with seven rebounds and three blocks.

Illinois had a challenging start, trailing by as many as 17 points in the first half but managed to take a brief lead in the second half. The team shot 41.5% from the field compared to Rutgers' 40.7%. Despite outrebounding Rutgers 41-40 and securing an advantage on offensive boards, Illinois could not secure a victory.

The Illini will continue their road trip facing Minnesota on Saturday evening at Williams Arena. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. CT tip-off and will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
