Illinois secured a 4-2 victory over North Carolina at the Chewning Tennis Center, ending their two-match road trip in the Tar Heel State. The Fighting Illini bounced back from losing the doubles point by claiming wins in singles at positions No. 1, 2, 4, and 5.
Head coach Brad Dancer expressed pride in his team's resilience, stating: "What a great culture win today. We have a number of guys on our team who have immense pride in themselves and the university and team they represent."
William Mroz and Jeremy Zhang achieved a swift 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles against UNC's Constantinos Djakouris and Nick Mangiapane. However, UNC won at No. 1 and 2 doubles to secure an early lead.
Mathis Debru equalized for Illinois with a commanding performance at No. 5 singles, defeating Mangiapane with scores of 6-1, 6-2. William Mroz then put Illinois ahead by beating Vladislav Melnic in straight sets.
North Carolina leveled the score again after Chris Xu defeated Jeremy Zhang at No. 3 singles. Tyler Bowers restored Illinois' lead with a straight-set victory over Anthony Wright at No. 4 singles.
Kenta Miyoshi sealed the win for Illinois by overcoming Djakouris in two tiebreaker sets at No. 1 singles.
The Fighting Illini will next compete on February 15 against Clemson and Notre Dame at Atkins Tennis Center.
