Illinois concluded the Fighting Illini Invite with four singles victories on Sunday at the Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana. The event featured Illinois, No. 8 Columbia, and Boise State over three days of competition.
Redshirt junior William Mroz was a standout performer for Illinois, winning his third singles match of the weekend and earning the title of Most Outstanding Singles Player at the invite. Mroz secured a straight-sets victory against Columbia's Sachin Palta, finishing 7-5, 7-6(5).
Jeremy Zhang claimed his first singles win of the spring season by defeating Boise State's James Van Herzeele in straight sets. Zhang won the first set 6-1 and battled to secure a 7-5 win in the second set.
Zach Viiala recorded his second career-ranked singles win by defeating No. 111 Jett Middleton from Boise State in straight sets. Viiala won the first set 7-5 and clinched the match with a 6-3 victory in the second set.
Max Mroz continued his successful run following his first collegiate singles win on Saturday. He took the opening set against Taiyo Kurata of Boise State with a score of 6-4 but dropped the second set 2-6. In a decisive superbreaker, Max Mroz emerged victorious with a score of 10-6.
The Fighting Illini are scheduled to play their first dual match of the season as part of ITA Kickoff Weekend. They will face No. 13 Tennessee in Knoxville on Saturday before playing either Auburn or Michigan on Sunday.
