The East team narrowly lost to the West with a score of 225.825-225.550 at the third annual College Gymnastics Association (CGA) All-Star competition held in Urbana, Illinois on Friday. Six athletes from the University of Illinois participated for the East.
Freshman Nathan Whitaker made a strong start for both his team and university by scoring 9.625 on floor exercise, securing an event title despite the West taking an early lead with 37.300 against East's 37.100 after the first rotation.
Brandon Dang and Will Hauke then competed on pommel horse, aiming to keep their team competitive. Dang achieved second place with a score of 9.700 while Hauke was close behind in third place with 9.650.
No competitors from Illinois participated in still rings, allowing the West to maintain its lead through this rotation.
Garrett Schooley represented his team on vault and earned a score of 9.700, winning another event title for the East before competing again on parallel bars where he scored 9.250, placing sixth.
The competition concluded with Tate Costa and Sam Phillips performing on high bar. Phillips scored a commendable 9.750, finishing third, while Costa took fourth place with a score of 9.600.
Illinois is set to begin their season at the Windy City Invite on January 18th against Michigan and Northern Illinois.
