Illinois guard Kasparas Jakucionis has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday. Jakucionis shares this week's honor with Rutgers' Dylan Harper.
Jakucionis delivered impressive performances against two top-20 teams, averaging 23 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. He played a crucial role in Illinois' victory over #20 Wisconsin by scoring a career-high 24 points, making eight field goals, and contributing six rebounds and five assists.
In another game against #1 Tennessee, Jakucionis scored a team-high 22 points and achieved a personal best of ten free throws made from fourteen attempts. This performance extended his record for consecutive 20-point games to five and maintained his position as the team's leading scorer.
This recognition marks Jakucionis as the second Illinois player to receive the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award this season; Will Riley was honored in week one.
Illinois is set to compete again on Sunday against Missouri in the annual McBride Homes Braggin' Rights game at Enterprise Center in St. Louis, with coverage on ESPN at noon.
