Illinois falls short against Ohio State in Big Ten basketball opener

No. 21 Illinois faced a setback in their Big Ten opener, losing to No. 12 Ohio State with a final score of 83-74 at the Schottenstein Center on Sunday afternoon. Despite leading during the initial quarters, Illinois was unable to maintain their advantage as Ohio State finished strong in the second period.

Genesis Bryant led Illinois' efforts with 22 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field and 4-for-8 from beyond the arc. Her performance included four rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Kendall Bostic contributed significantly with her fifth double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and securing a team-high of 13 rebounds.

Jasmine Brown-Hagger made an impact off the bench by adding 14 points and five rebounds. Berry Wallace returned after a seven-game absence to contribute eight points and three rebounds.

The game marked Illinois' first loss in conference play this season, dropping their record to 7-2 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten matchups. They will return home to face Bradley on Thursday at State Farm Center.

"Illinois outrebounded Ohio State, 44-32," demonstrating their dominance on the boards despite the loss. The Illini also forced double-digit turnovers for the ninth consecutive game.

Shauna Green's coaching record against Ohio State stands at "0-3," as she continues her tenure with an overall record of "48-27 at Illinois."

Illinois will look to rebound from this defeat as they continue their season aiming for success in upcoming games.
