Sixty young participants took part in the State 4-H Livestock Skillathon at the University of Illinois campus. The event included a contest and a workshop aimed at preparing participants for future contests.
The contest tested knowledge through various activities such as livestock quizzes, hay and wool judging, and identifying breeds, feeds, meat cuts, and equipment.
"Livestock Skillathons are a great opportunity for 4-H’ers who love learning about livestock and the animal agriculture industry," said Myla Munro, University of Illinois Extension 4-H youth development educator. "Skillathons allow youth to demonstrate and expand their knowledge through experiential learning while also providing an opportunity to develop life skills like critical thinking and problem solving."
Winners in different divisions were announced. In the Junior Division, Delaney Crouch from Macon County secured first place. Gracie Walker from Hamilton County topped the Intermediate Division. Benjamin Wamsley from Christian County led the Senior Division.
This skillathon serves as preparation for the Superior Young Producers Skillathon held annually at the Illinois State Fair. The event was organized by the Illinois State 4-H Livestock Ambassador Team and the University of Illinois Department of Animal Science.
The information was provided by Dan Jennings, an Illinois 4-H Educator. Carissa Nelson, Media Communications Manager at the 4-H State Office, contributed to this report.
Illinois 4-H is part of University of Illinois Extension's flagship youth development program under the College of Agriculture, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences. It focuses on empowering young people with skills for their future careers through hands-on experiences.
