One weekend, over 100 seventh and eighth-grade students gathered to enhance their leadership skills at the 2024 construction-themed 4-H Junior Leadership Conference. The event took place on November 2-3 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield, Illinois.
"The core value of JLC is to teach the next generation of leaders about the skills that will help them become better leaders in their clubs and communities," said Ross Vancil, chair of the 2024 Youth Leadership Team.
The conference was organized by 25 members of the Illinois Youth Leadership Team who aimed to equip participants with new leadership and communication skills. Attendees included members from other state teams such as 4 Healthy Living Ambassadors, Livestock Ambassadors, and Influencers.
"The Illinois 4-H Junior Leadership Conference offers a unique opportunity for our youth to grow as individuals and as leaders," stated Katie Duitsman, University of Illinois Extension 4-H youth development specialist.
Workshops during the weekend focused on small-group communication, networking, equity in leadership, and teamwork. Participants engaged in interactive activities designed to teach effective leadership strategies.
On Sunday, attendees continued building their leadership abilities with a focus on environmental consciousness and community service.
"Through engaging workshops, inspiring speakers, and hands-on activities, our participants will develop the confidence and skills to reach their full potential," added Duitsman.
The event was made possible through the efforts of the Illinois 4-H Youth Leadership Team—comprising high school and college-aged members—and young adult alumni. Financial support came from the Illinois 4-H Foundation which raises private funds for the program. Additional sponsorship was provided by the Illinois Farm Bureau.
