Josh Kreutz, a senior at the University of Illinois, has embraced his role as team captain for the Fighting Illini football team. Raised in a family deeply involved with football, Kreutz's passion for the sport was cultivated early on. His father, Olin Kreutz, played professionally in the NFL for teams like the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Josh said, "I always loved football, and it helped growing up around the game. Everyone in my family loves football." He recalled attending games at Soldier Field with his family during his father's career.
Kreutz's journey into playing tackle football began in third grade while living in New Orleans. Initially trying out as a quarterback, he soon transitioned to offensive line positions. His ambition to play professionally was clear from an early age: "My dream since I was a kid is to play in the NFL."
During high school at Loyola Academy near Chicago, Kreutz focused on offensive line roles and contributed significantly to his team's success. Notably, he played a part in leading the Ramblers to a state title in 2018.
In college recruitment, despite interest from several programs, Kreutz committed to Illinois when offered by his home-state university. He expressed that decision as pivotal: "When your home-state school calls, it’s hard to say no."
Joining Illinois under head coach Bret Bielema's leadership in 2021, Kreutz redshirted his first year but remained motivated. By 2022 he participated more actively and secured a starting position as center by 2023.
Recognized by peers as team captain this season and listed on the Polynesian College Player of the Year Watch List, Kreutz continues to aim high: "Right now I’m just focused on winning these games this year."
