Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer has been named to the Davey O'Brien Award Class of 2024, as announced by the award's committee. Altmyer is among 35 quarterbacks vying for the prestigious Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.
This season, Altmyer has led Illinois to a 6-2 record and maintained a top-25 national ranking for seven weeks. In three victories over top-25 teams, he accumulated 560 yards of offense with a completion rate of 65.7% (46/70), six touchdowns (five passing, one rushing), and no interceptions. Notably, his four-touchdown game against Nebraska remains unmatched in top-25 road wins this season.
Altmyer's performance ranks him among the nation's best quarterbacks, leading the Big Ten and placing third nationally in touchdown/interception ratio at 15/3. He also ranks 24th in touchdown passes (15) and holds a passing efficiency rating of 137.7.
The Illini will face Minnesota at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on FS1.
The list of candidates includes Drew Allar from Penn State, Rocco Becht from Iowa State, Carson Beck from Georgia, Max Brosmer from Minnesota, Bryson Daily from Army West Point, Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss, Kyron Drones from Virginia Tech, Quinn Ewers from Texas, Dillon Gabriel from Oregon among others.
From these candidates, sixteen semifinalists will be selected based on votes by the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee and bonus ballots awarded through the first round of fan voting on social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (X). The fan vote requires participants to like posts highlighting their preferred quarterback. First-round voting concludes on Friday, Nov. 8 at 11:59 p.m. ET with semifinalists announced on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The three finalists will be determined by Tuesday, Nov. 26 before announcing the winner live on Thursday Dec.,12 during The Home Depot College Football Awards broadcasted by ESPN.
