The Fighting Illini men's golf team, ranked No. 12, has taken the lead after the first two rounds of the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational in Loxley, Alabama. The team posted scores of 276 and 283, reaching a total of 17-under-par as they head into Sunday's final round at Steelwood Country Club.
Senior Jackson Buchanan is a standout performer for Illinois, following his recent victory at the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational. He recorded consecutive rounds of 67 (-5), placing him at 10-under and in second place overall. Buchanan trails Kansas State's Nick Mason by four strokes, who leads with a score of -14.
Junior Ryan Voois also contributed significantly to Illinois' position, opening with a round of 67 (-5) and finishing with a round of 73, bringing his total to -4 and placing him within the top ten.
Sophomore Max Herendeen stands at 23rd place with scores of 70 (-2) and 73 (+1), while freshman Trey Marrion is tied for 32nd at +1. Sophomore Ethan Wilson is tied for 38th at +2.
Freshman Jake Birdwell is competing individually and holds a tie for fifth place at -6 after achieving a career-low score of 68 (-4) in Round 1 followed by a round of 70 (-2).
Illinois maintains a three-stroke lead over Kansas State (-14) and is four strokes ahead of Kennesaw State (-13). Rice (-11) and Memphis (-8) complete the top five teams heading into the third round.
The competition resumes on Sunday morning with tee times starting at 7:45 a.m. CT from Holes 1 and 10. The Illini will begin their play off Hole No.1 alongside Kansas State and Kennesaw State starting at 9:15 a.m. CT. Live scoring will be available through Clippd Scoreboard.
