Illinois women's tennis secures victory over Rutgers in Big Ten matchup

The Illinois women's tennis team celebrated a successful weekend at the Atkins Tennis Center, defeating Rutgers 4-2 on Sunday. This victory advances No. 46 Illinois to a 10-5 record for the season and 2-0 in league play, while maintaining an impressive 7-1 home match record. Rutgers, ranked No. 75, now stands at 8-5 overall and remains winless in Big Ten play.

Under head coach Evan Clark, Illinois has maintained a perfect 9-0 record against Rutgers. The team's ninth doubles point of the season was secured during this match, marking their third consecutive opening tally win.

The first completed doubles match saw McKenna Schaefbauer and Kasia Treiber achieve a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles, improving their partnership record to 2-0. Kida Ferrari and Josie Frazier followed with a decisive 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, leveling their dual season record to 2-2.

Rutgers equalized the score with a win at No. 1 singles, but Frazier quickly responded with a straight-set victory (6-2, 6-2) at No. 3 singles. Alice Xu extended Illinois' lead with her own straight-set win (6-4, 6-3) at No. 6 singles after overcoming early setbacks in both sets.

Rutgers narrowed the gap with a three-set triumph at No. 5 singles (2-6, 7-5, 6-3). However, Treiber clinched the match for Illinois by winning her contest at No. 4 singles (6-4, 3-6, 6-3), securing her fourth match victory of the season.

Illinois will travel next weekend for matches against Iowa on March 22 and Nebraska on March 24.
