Illinois advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament with a 4-1 victory over Rutgers. The match took place at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This win marks Illinois' 16th consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals, continuing a streak that began in 2008.
With this victory, Illinois improved its overall record to 17-8, while Rutgers concluded its season with a 12-12 record. Illinois remains undefeated against Rutgers, boasting a 10-0 all-time record and an 8-0 mark under head coach Evan Clark.
The Fighting Illini secured the doubles point by winning matches at No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Kate Duong and Megan Heuser achieved a swift victory at No. 1 doubles with a score of 6-2 after taking an early lead of 5-0. Their current season record stands at 6-6 overall and they have won two out of three dual matches in the top slot. Kasia Treiber and McKenna Schaefbauer also won their match at No. 3 doubles with a score of 6-3, improving their season record to an impressive 8-3.
Kasia Treiber was first to finish her singles match, securing a straight-set victory at No.5 singles with scores of 6-2,7-5, giving Illinois an early lead in the match.
Rutgers responded by winning the point at No.1 singles but Josie Frazier restored Illinois' advantage by winning her match at No.4 singles with scores of 6-2, 7-5.
McKenna Schaefbauer clinched the overall victory for Illinois by defeating her opponent in three sets at No.2 singles (6–4, 3–6, 6–1). This marked Schaefbauer's first time securing a decisive win for her team.
Looking ahead, Illinois will face Wisconsin in the quarterfinals on April 26th from Varsity Tennis Center after previously losing to them earlier this month.
