Illinois falls short against Wisconsin in Big Ten tennis quarterfinals

Fifth-seeded Illinois faced a setback with a 4-1 defeat against fourth-seeded Wisconsin in the Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament quarterfinals on Friday. The match took place at Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center, marking Illinois' 16th consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals.

With this loss, Illinois now holds a 17-9 overall record for the season, while Wisconsin improved to an 18-5 standing.

The Badgers initiated the scoring by securing the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions. However, Kasia Treiber and McKenna Schaefbauer achieved a notable win at No. 3 doubles with a score of 6-1, enhancing their overall record to 10-2.

In singles play, Wisconsin won four out of six opening sets. Josie Frazier and Treiber managed to win their initial frames for Illinois. Although Illinois made a comeback by winning four second sets, Wisconsin clinched both completed third sets.

Wisconsin extended its lead to 2-0 by claiming victory at No. 2 singles before Illinois scored its first point through Treiber's performance at No. 5 singles. Treiber secured her sixth consecutive win with scores of 6-2, 6-3, raising her season record to an impressive 18-13.

Wisconsin concluded the match with three-set wins at No. 3 and No. 1 singles positions, resulting in a final score of 4-1.
