Illinois athletes achieve top marks at Hurricane Invitational

The Illinois track and field teams concluded their first outdoor meet of the season at the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Florida. Junior Jackson Marseille achieved a high jump of 2.14 meters, securing third place and marking the fourth-best jump in program history. Graduate student Taylor Beard was runner-up in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.77 meters, placing her eighth in the program's records.

Freshman Eleftherios Kontonikola made his debut in javelin, throwing 66.63 meters, which is the fourth-furthest mark for Illinois. This competition marked his return after shoulder surgery last year, earning him sixth place.

In the 1500-meter run, junior Halle Hill won the women's title with a time of 4:21.04, while junior Nicolas Dovalovsky claimed victory in the men's race with a time of 3:48.68. Senior Will Merrick took gold in the 2000-meter steeplechase with a time of 5:50.62.

Freshman Jackson Gilbert earned bronze in the 400-meter dash with a personal best of 47.25 seconds. Sophomore Azariyah Bryant tied her personal best in the 100 meters at 11.51 seconds, finishing fifth overall. Sophomore Tadeas Placek improved his personal best to 21.96 seconds in the 200 meters, and senior Robert Williams finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.12 seconds.

The men's relay team consisting of Gilbert, Placek, freshman Alex Ornelas, and Williams placed fifth in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:14.68.

The Illini track and field teams will take a break next week before competing again on March 29-30 at the Florida Relays.
