Senior golfer Jackson Buchanan led the Fighting Illini men's golf team to a tie for second place at the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational in Saucier, Mississippi. Buchanan, who is the reigning Big Ten Golfer of the Year, secured his fourth collegiate title with a total score of 209 (-7). After an initial round of 75 (+3), he improved significantly with rounds of 68 (-4) and 66 (-6).
Buchanan's performance was enough to edge out LSU's Arni Sveinsson and Ole Miss' Kye Meeks, who both finished at 6-under. The Illini had two other players in the top ten: sophomore Max Herendeen tied for fourth with a score of 212 (-4), and freshman Trey Marrion finished ninth at 215 (-1).
Junior Ryan Voois ended tied for 17th with a score of 217 (+1), marking his second top-20 finish this season. Sophomore Ethan Wilson tied for 41st at 223 (+7), while freshman Jake Birdwell, competing individually, scored 227 (+11).
Ole Miss won the team event by nine strokes over Illinois and LSU. Georgia and South Carolina completed the top five.
The Fighting Illini will next compete at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational in Loxley, Alabama.
