The Fighting Illini men's golf team delivered a strong performance in the second round of the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational, carding a 10-under 278 on Sunday. This marked the second-lowest team round of the day and improved their standing to fourth place at even-par as they head into Monday's final round at Beau Rivage Resort's Fallen Oak Course.
True freshman Trey Marrion was a standout performer for Illinois, shooting a bogey-free, career-low round of 67 (-5). This effort allowed him to jump 36 spots up the leaderboard, placing him three shots behind leader Frankie Harris of South Carolina. Marrion's score is not only his best in his collegiate career but also ranks as the third-lowest individual score through two rounds in this event.
Senior Jackson Buchanan also contributed significantly with a near-career performance, carding a 68 (-4) with only one bogey. He currently sits tied for 10th individually with an overall score of 143 (-1), just one stroke behind Marrion.
Sophomore Max Herendeen and junior Ryan Voois added solid scores to help Illinois maintain their position within the top five teams. Herendeen shot a 2-under 70 to reach an overall score of 145 (+1), while Voois is at 146 (+2).
Sophomore Ethan Wilson and freshman Jake Birdwell are further down in standings. Wilson recorded his second consecutive round of 75 and is tied for 46th place. Birdwell, competing as an individual, improved from Round 1 by five strokes and is tied for 61st.
Currently ranked No.15, Illinois trails co-host Ole Miss by thirteen strokes, with LSU and South Carolina occupying second and third places respectively.
