The Fighting Illini men's golf team commenced their participation at the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational on Saturday. The team achieved an opening score of 298 (+10), placing them in a tie for seventh after the first round at the Beau Rivage Resort's Fallen Oak Course in Saucier, Mississippi.
Ranked No. 15 in the initial NCAA men's golf team ranking of the season and No. 13 in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll, Illinois finds itself five strokes away from the top five and trailing leader Georgia by 11 shots.
Junior Ryan Voois led Illinois with a score of 1-over 73, tying him for 22nd place, four strokes behind South Carolina's Frankie Harris who holds the lead after 18 holes.
Senior Jackson Buchanan, sophomores Max Herendeen and Ethan Wilson, along with freshman Trey Marrion, each recorded rounds of 75 (+3), tying them for 39th place.
Freshman Jake Birdwell, participating as an individual competitor, started his weekend with a score of 7-over 79 and is tied for 68th in a field comprising 75 players.
