Illinois men's tennis team secured a 6-1 victory over Purdue on Friday night at the Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana. This win brings Illinois to a season record of 15-8 and a Big Ten conference record of 5-3.
Head coach Brad Dancer expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, stating, "We're showing some great progress and team spirit. There's still room to grow and we have to keep pushing ourselves. Our guys are improving and getting into a competitive mindset and that's all we need to keep doing. We have enough skill on this team to get things going."
In doubles play, Kenta Miyoshi and Mathis Debru achieved a 6-2 win against Stefan Simeunovic and Henrik Villanger. The duo of Lucas Horve and Oliver Okonkwo secured the doubles point by defeating Daniel Labrador and Juan David Velasquez with a score of 6-4.
In singles matches, Jeremy Zhang claimed a straight-set victory over Mujtaba Ali-Khan, winning 6-3, 6-0. Tyler Bowers clinched the overall match for Illinois with his 6-3, 6-4 win against David Velasquez.
The remaining singles matches saw Alex Petrov winning against Simeunovic with scores of 6-1, 7-6 (8), while Miyoshi defeated Soham Purohit in three sets: 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Illinois will face Indiana next on Sunday at noon Central Time during Senior Day at Atkins Tennis Center.
