Thad Ward has been elevated to the position of Assistant Head Coach/Running Backs Coach at Illinois, as announced by head coach Bret Bielema. "Thad has been impressive since the day he arrived in the building," stated Bielema. He further added, "Over the last year, I've seen him grow in many aspects. He will take on a larger role in the player development of our full roster, both on and off the field."
Ward expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, saying, "I'm eager to continue to grow and learn under Coach Bielema's leadership." He also mentioned his gratitude towards Bielema: "I appreciate Coach B for the opportunity ahead, and I'm excited for the future here at Illinois."
Ward is currently in his fifth season and second stint with Illinois as of 2024. His extensive coaching experience spans over two decades in college football. Previously, he served as running backs coach at Illinois from 2016-18 before being rehired in January 2023.
The Fighting Illini are set to begin their spring practices on Tuesday.
