The Fighting Illini men's golf team, ranked 18th and seeded at the top, is currently tied for fourth place after the first round of the Big Ten Championship held at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. The team posted a score of 290 (+10), trailing Northwestern's leading score of even-par 280 by ten strokes. The Illini are striving for their ninth consecutive conference title and their 21st overall.

Coach Mike Small commented on the team's performance, stating, "We didn't finish, but the end of this golf course is difficult. We closed on the tough side, but I thought that we played OK for most of the day." He emphasized the need for maturity and better course management moving forward.

Individually, junior Jackson Buchanan led Illinois with a score of 71, tying him for eighth place. Sophomore Ryan Voois followed closely with a score of 72, placing him in a tie for 14th. Buchanan had four birdies but slipped due to a bogey and double-bogey towards the end. Voois managed an eagle on No. 6 and balanced his score with additional birdies and bogeys.

Senior Piercen Hunt and freshman Max Herendeen also contributed to the team's total with scores of 73 and 74 respectively. Freshman Ethan Wilson completed the lineup with a score of 76.

Round two will commence with tee times starting at 9 a.m. ET/8 a.m. CT. The Illini will begin their play from hole No.1 at 9:50 a.m. ET/8:50 a.m. CT.
