The Illinois men's golf team, ranked 18th nationally and seeded third, continued their strong performance at the NCAA Stanford Regional on Tuesday. The team finished the day with a score of 10-under 270 at Stanford Golf Course, maintaining a one-shot lead heading into the final round.
Illinois stands at 533 (-27), securing a significant 20-shot advantage over host Stanford, which is in sixth place with a score of 553 (-7). The top five teams after Round 3 will advance to the NCAA Championship scheduled for May 24-29 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
Freshman Max Herendeen held onto his individual lead despite facing challenges early in Round 2. After an impressive first round with a score of 63, Herendeen encountered difficulties but managed to recover by shooting six-under over the next eleven holes. He ended the day tied for first place with Florida State's Luke Clanton and Texas A&M's Phichaksn Maichon, each holding a two-round total of 131 (-9).
Senior Piercen Hunt and fifth-year senior Tyler Goecke also contributed significantly to Illinois' performance. Hunt improved from his initial round score to post a season-low-tying 65 (-5), moving up to 24th place overall. Goecke maintained his form from the previous day, scoring a nearly flawless round of 67 (-3) and tying for fourth place.
Sophomore Ryan Voois delivered another solid performance with an even-par score of 70. Despite some early struggles, he recovered well and is currently tied for 33rd place.
Big Ten Golfer of the Year Jackson Buchanan had difficulty finding his rhythm in Round 2. After an opening round score of 65 (-5), he posted a second-round score of 74 (+4), placing him tied for 25th overall.
As they prepare for Wednesday's final round, Illinois leads top-seeded Florida State by one stroke (534, -26) and holds a six-stroke lead over fourth-seeded Texas A&M (539, -21). Ole Miss and SMU complete the top five just ahead of Stanford.
Round 3 begins Wednesday morning at Stanford Golf Course. The Illini will tee off alongside Florida State and Texas A&M starting at No.1 hole.
