For the first time in its history, the Illinois women's basketball team will compete in April, having secured a place in the semifinals of the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT). The Fighting Illini are set to face Washington State at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Monday evening.

The team's journey to this point has been marked by determination and perseverance. Head coach Shauna Green expressed excitement about reaching this stage, saying, "We're super excited to be playing in this tournament and make the Final Four." She highlighted the significance of playing into April and participating in back-to-back postseasons for the first time since 2007 and 2008. "It's a really big step for us," she added.

Illinois' path to Indianapolis included a comeback win over Missouri State, a decisive victory against Stony Brook, and a dominant performance against Tulsa. Each game posed unique challenges, but junior Adalia McKenzie emphasized the importance of still being able to play at this stage: "This opportunity means everything."

McKenzie's dedication was evident during their quarterfinal match against Tulsa when she sustained an eye injury yet returned to play after receiving medical attention. Coach Green praised her toughness: "That's focus. That's grit."

Senior Kendall Bostic also commended McKenzie's resilience: "I was really hoping she would come back in the game... Having her come back was huge."

As Illinois prepares for its semifinal matchup, Bostic looks forward to competing close to home with support from friends and family. She noted the significance of potentially becoming the first champion of this tournament.

Illinois remains the only team that had to travel away from home en route to Indianapolis. Coach Green believes that experience could provide an advantage: "This tournament has provided so much as we are building and going forward into next year."

The Illini will face Washington State at 4 p.m. CT on Monday.
