Redshirt junior Edmond Ruth has progressed to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships after the first day of competition in Kansas City, Missouri. Competing in the 174-pound category, Ruth, a Big Ten champion, secured his advancement with two victories.
In his initial match, Ruth faced Myles Takats from Bucknell. The bout was tied at one each after three periods. However, Ruth's takedown secured him a 4-1 decision win. His second match was against Alex Cramer from Central Michigan University (CMU). This contest was tightly contested and ended with Ruth winning by decision 2-1 due to a stall call against Cramer.
Ruth is set to face Ohio State's Rocco Welsh next. He has defeated Welsh twice this season already.
Meanwhile, true freshman Chris Moore faced Wisconsin's Dean Hamiti but lost via fall in the first period. In the consolation bracket, Moore met Caleb Fish from Michigan State University for their third encounter this season but was defeated in sudden victory.
Redshirt sophomore Danny Pucino also competed but fell to Brock Hardy from Nebraska and then to Cleveland Belton from Oregon State in the consolation round.
The NCAA Championships will continue tomorrow with session three starting at 11 a.m. CT and session four at 7 p.m. CT.
