The University of Illinois men's tennis team, ranked 19th, secured victories in both matches of their doubleheader on Friday. They achieved a 5-0 win against Eastern Illinois and a 5-2 triumph over the 14th-ranked Baylor team.
In the match against Eastern Illinois, Hunter Heck and Lucas Horve opened with a doubles victory, defeating Tyler Carlin and Zach White with a score of 6-3. Karlis Ozolins and Alex Petrov followed with a decisive 6-0 win over Pau Riera and Thomas Wallace to claim the doubles point.
Kenta Miyoshi dominated in singles play by beating Riera 6-0, 6-2 at the No.1 spot. Mathis Debru won against Wallace with scores of 6-1, 6-2. Tyler Bowers secured the match by defeating William Hays 6-0, 6-2, while Lucas Horve overcame White with scores of 6-2, 6-0.
Facing Baylor, Ozolins and Heck defeated Luc Koenig and Devin Badenhorst in doubles with a score of 6-1. Oliver Okonkwo and Horve clinched another doubles point for Illinois by winning against Tadeas Paroulek and Zsombor Velcz at 6-4.
Okonkwo continued his strong performance in singles by beating Koenig with scores of 6-2, 6-2. Miyoshi also contributed to the team's success by overcoming Louis Bowden at scores of 6-1, 6-4.
Ozolins clinched the overall match for Illinois after securing victory over Paroulek with scores of 6-3,7 -5. Despite further competition decided by coaches to continue play beyond this point, Petrov won his match against Badenhorst after three sets: losing initially at [4]-[5], but then coming back to win two consecutive sets [10]-[8].
Head coach Brad Dancer expressed respect for Baylor's team stating: "We've got so much respect for Baylor," adding that Okonkwo showed leadership skills that positively influenced teammates' performances throughout matches played during events held today." He also noted Ozolins deserved credit given how he successfully clinched key points necessary leading up towards eventual wins attained during today's doubleheader event sequence".
