The Illinois wrestling team faced a challenging match against No. 11 Minnesota, resulting in a 28-12 defeat on Friday at the State Farm Center. Despite the loss, head coach Mike Poeta acknowledged the team's effort and highlighted key performances from senior wrestlers.

"When you look up at the scoreboard obviously it's not the result we wanted," said Poeta. "With that being said, the guys fought hard and showed a lot of heart out there on the mat tonight. I'm happy for Justin Cardani and Tony Madrigal to go out with wins here on senior night. We will look to build off our effort here and bring it to Wisconsin on Sunday."

Illinois began strong by winning the first three matches, taking an early 9-0 lead. Redshirt senior Justin Cardani (125 lbs.) won his match against Brandon Morvari of Minnesota after an intense tie-breaking round, finishing with a score of 9-6.

Graduate student Tony Madrigal (133 lbs.) secured another victory for Illinois by shutting out Tyler Wells of Minnesota 4-0 through strategic shots and defense.

Redshirt sophomore Danny Pucino continued Illinois' momentum with an 8-5 win over Vance VomBaur of Minnesota, making use of effective escapes and takedowns in the third period.

Edmond Ruth (174 lbs.), a redshirt junior, achieved his 15th win in consecutive seasons by defeating Andrew Sparks of Minnesota with a decisive score of 7-1, bolstered by two late-period takedowns.

The Fighting Illini will next compete against No. 23 Wisconsin in Madison on Sunday.
