Fighting Illini soccer secured a point in a goalless draw against Northwestern at Martin Stadium, Evanston. The match on Thursday night saw the Orange and Blue's season record move to 5-3-3. This tie marks their first points in Evanston since April 2021.

Illinois had an early chance to score in the ninth minute through Lia Howard, Sydney Stephens, and Makala Woods' play, which set up Bel Rolley for a shot that narrowly missed the target. The Illini defense held strong until Northwestern managed a shot on goal in the 24th minute. Illinois goalkeeper Julia Cili made crucial saves during this period.

Before halftime, Ellen Persson connected with Mya Archibald from a set-piece opportunity, but Archibald's header was caught by the Wildcat keeper. At halftime, despite Northwestern leading 9-2 in total shots, Illinois allowed only two shots on target.

In the second half, Illinois created an opportunity in the 47th minute with Archibald's run down the right wing. However, her shot was saved by the keeper. Shortly after, Cili made another important save followed by Ella Karolak's block of a follow-up attempt.

Cili's fourth save came in the 60th minute as she intercepted a Wildcat attacker alone in space. Despite Northwestern controlling possession for much of the game, Illinois' defense prevented any further shots on target for over thirty minutes.

Illinois almost clinched victory late when Sarah Hiestand set up Woods for a chance that went awry due to heavy touch. In the final moments of regulation time, Howard nearly scored but her attempt was deflected around the post.

The Fighting Illini will face Ohio State next at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. CT.
