One month into the 2023-24 season, the Illinois women's basketball team found itself at a pivotal moment. Despite a strong start in non-conference play, with five wins out of seven games and an impressive average victory margin of 36.6 points, a home loss to Michigan in their Big Ten opener prompted introspection among the players.

Kendall Bostic reflected on the need for positivity and learning from setbacks: “It's about really trying to make sure everybody is being positive when they need to be, and then getting back to work and learning from this game,” she said on December 10.

The team prioritized bonding activities outside of basketball, such as game nights and potlucks. Coach Shauna Green acknowledged their improved cohesion after winning consecutive Big Ten games against Northwestern and Rutgers. “I'm just really proud of this team, how we performed today, how we performed Sunday, and how we've attacked the last month," Green stated following a win over Rutgers on January 17.

Camille Hobby highlighted the importance of teamwork after scoring a season-high 19 points in a comeback victory against Minnesota. “I really enjoy going out there and playing, especially with this group of women. It makes it a lot more fun,” she commented on January 28.

Illinois continued its strong performance with victories leading up to an important match against Indiana on Presidents’ Day. Adalia McKenzie emphasized the team's unity: “We’re really together. We’re really tight,” she said on February 19.

Coach Green's leadership has been central to fostering this sense of togetherness. The coaching staff maintains an open-door policy for players to discuss issues freely. Team-building activities over the summer helped solidify these bonds.

Shay Bollin noted that despite initial shyness among teammates, they have grown closer through shared experiences: "When you're chasing something with a group of people... you all automatically come together," Bollin remarked.

As Illinois heads into the Big Ten Tournament against Maryland, Genesis Bryant stressed their commitment to core values amid adversity: "We build off of being a family; that's our first core value," Bryant explained.

With confidence from recent successes and strong team chemistry, Illinois aims for further achievements in postseason play.
