Illinois baseball secured a 7-4 victory over Maryland in their Big Ten series opener at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The win extends Illinois' winning streak to nine games, including four consecutive conference victories.
Jack Crowder led the Illini on the mound, earning the win with six innings of work, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out five. Ben Plumley contributed with two scoreless innings in relief, while Joe Glassey closed the game by securing his fifth save.
Coltin Quagliano made a significant impact offensively, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Camden Janik also had a strong performance with two hits and three RBIs. Brody Harding added to the team's efforts with a multi-hit game as well.
The Illini began scoring early, with Cal Hejza's double setting up Janik for an RBI single in the first inning. Quagliano extended the lead in the second inning before Maryland responded with a run in the third. However, Illinois widened their lead again in the fourth inning thanks to Janik's contributions.
Crowder continued to hold Maryland at bay through five innings before Quagliano hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. Despite Maryland's attempts to rally late in the game, Glassey managed to secure Illinois' victory by retiring the final batter.
The series continues tomorrow at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium with an early afternoon game scheduled.
