Illinois men's tennis team secured a 4-2 victory over Nebraska on Friday evening at the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln. This win brings Illinois to an 11-8 record for the season and 2-3 in conference play, while Nebraska now stands at 12-8 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten competition.
"The guys responded well today," said head coach Brad Dancer. "This group that is here is demonstrating tremendous leadership. It's been a fun trip and we know we have another challenge Sunday."
In doubles matches, Shunya Maruyama and Leo Linquet from Illinois defeated Alex Petrov and William Mroz with a score of 6-2. However, Nebraska's Nic Wiedenhorn and Anton Shepp clinched the doubles point by overcoming Hunter Heck and Lucas Horve with a 6-4 victory.
In singles competition, No. 34-ranked Hunter Heck quickly dispatched Anton Shepp with a straight-set win of 6-1, 6-1. Mathis Debru followed by defeating Roni Hietaranta with scores of 7-5, 6-2, while William Mroz overcame Lars Johann in two sets, winning 7-6 (5), 6-3.
After Lucas Horve's loss to Leo Linquet, Alex Petrov secured the final victory for Illinois by defeating No. 109-ranked Calvin Mueller in three sets: 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
