Illinois gymnastics heads to Big Five meet against top competitors

The Illinois women's gymnastics team, ranked No. 21, is set to compete in the Big 5 Meet at University Park, Pennsylvania. The event will take place on Saturday, February 24, at 3:30 p.m. CT at Rec Hall. The Fighting Illini will face Iowa, Maryland, No. 11 Michigan, and host No. 22 Penn State.

Iowa recently faced a loss against No. 14 Ohio State with a score of 197.125-196.075. In that meet, Karina Muñoz was the standout performer for Iowa by winning an event on beam with a score of 9.900 and securing second place in the all-around with a score of 39.425.

Maryland competed against No. 8 Michigan State and lost with a score of 197.550-195.525 in East Lansing, Michigan. Alexa Rothenbuescher won an event on floor with a score of 9.900 for Maryland, while Josephine Kogler placed third on vault scoring 9.85 and Emma Silberman took second place on beam scoring 9.875.

Michigan's performance was strong as they defeated Rutgers with a score of 197.650-194.625 on February 16 at Elevate the Stage in Toledo, Ohio. The Wolverines excelled across events without scoring below a 9.950 in any category during the meet where Gabby Wilson achieved her second perfect score of the season (10) on floor.

Penn State narrowly lost to No. 23 Nebraska with scores of 196.500-196.400 but had notable performances from Ava Piedrahita who scored a title-winning performance on bars (9.875) and Bella Salcedo who matched that achievement on beam (9.875). Piedrahita also secured second place in the all-around competition with a total score of 39.300.

Illinois has climbed back into national rankings at position No. 21 following impressive performances achieving season highs recently—scoring 196.550 at GymQuarters Invitational and 196850 versus No15 Minnesota
