Illinois men's tennis is preparing to face Toledo in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The match is scheduled for Friday, May 3, at 12 p.m. CT at the Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington, Kentucky.
A victory would advance Illinois to a second-round match against either DePaul or No. 5 seed and host Kentucky on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
Earlier this year, Illinois defeated Toledo with a score of 4-0 on January 20 at Atkins Tennis Center. However, later that day, Illinois lost to Kentucky by a narrow margin of 4-3.
Historically, Illinois holds a strong record against Toledo with five wins and no losses. Their first encounter took place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1965, where Illinois won 6-3. The teams did not meet again until 2008 when Illinois secured a 6-1 victory.
Toledo enters the tournament on a six-match winning streak after defeating Northern Illinois (4-0) and Western Michigan (4-1) to win the Mid-American Conference Championships. Pawit Sornlaksup from Toledo is ranked No. 68 in the ITA Singles Rankings, although as a team, Toledo is not ranked and gained entry into the tournament through an automatic berth by winning their conference championship.
