Illinois soccer ends unbeaten run with loss to Kentucky

The Fighting Illini soccer team concluded their two-match trip to Kentucky with a 1-0 loss against the University of Kentucky at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex. This result brings Illinois' season record to 3-1-1, ending their unbeaten streak of four matches.

Illinois started the match strong, challenging the Kentucky goalkeeper with four saves within the first 15 minutes. Sarah Foley nearly scored in the 14th minute from a cross by Sydney Stephens, but her attempt was saved.

Despite Illinois controlling the early stages, it was Kentucky that almost scored first in the 20th minute. Julia Cili made a crucial save from a close-range header to keep the game scoreless. However, seven minutes later, Kentucky found the net and took a 1-0 lead.

At halftime, Illinois trailed for the first time this season despite having more shots and shots on goal than their opponents.

In the second half, Illinois continued to apply pressure. Stephens forced another save in the 51st minute after a long-range shot led to an early corner opportunity. However, they could not convert these chances into goals.

Kentucky came close to extending their lead in the 69th minute, but Cili made two quick successive saves to maintain hope for Illinois. Despite these efforts, Illinois could not find an equalizer in the remaining time.

The Fighting Illini will face Missouri next on Thursday, September 7th at 6:00 p.m. CT as they conclude their five-match road trip.
