Illinois 4-H teens recently engaged with state legislators at the State Capitol, showcasing their leadership and communication skills as part of the 4-H Legislative Connection event held on February 7 and 8. This initiative allows participants to promote the Illinois 4-H program to elected officials while gaining insight into the legislative process.
The youth involved, aged between 14 and 19, have completed specific training known as Speaking for Illinois 4-H and are members of a statewide leadership team. Patty McGlaughlin, a University of Illinois Extension 4-H specialist, explained that "these 4-H members receive advanced training at Speaking for Illinois 4-H ahead of the event." During the Legislative Connection, they visit state legislators to share personal stories and highlight the benefits of both the 4-H program and local University of Illinois Extension initiatives.
Participants in this year's event included Bella Binkley from McLean County, Katelyn Davis from White County, A.J. Harris from Morgan County, Emma Hughes from Montgomery County, Saralynn Joiner from Macoupin County, Asher Munar from Kendall County, Willard Rozanas from Boone County, Andrea Schaffnit from Adams County, Lainey Sullivan from Hancock County, Ross Vancil from Henderson County, and Lance Woolam also from Adams County.
The teens scheduled appointments with state leaders to effectively communicate the value of 4-H using persuasive speaking techniques supported by data and examples. McGlaughlin emphasized the importance of this interaction: "This event is important because legislators have the opportunity to hear from the youth in their districts."
An additional session of Legislative Connection is planned for May 16-17. More information about this event can be found on its dedicated webpage.
Illinois 4-H is a prominent youth development program under the University of Illinois Extension. It aims to empower young individuals through hands-on experiences that prepare them for future careers. Research indicates that participants are more likely to contribute positively to their communities and engage in civic activities.
