Four Illinois 4-H members participated in the 2023 National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference held in Louisville, Kentucky. This event acknowledges 4-H members who have excelled in their state-level poultry activities and aims to provide national-level contests to introduce participants to the poultry industry.
“This National 4-H event is important for senior-aged 4-H members,” stated Ken Koelkebeck, a poultry specialist from the University of Illinois Extension. “Getting the chance to compete in this event is a testament to their excellence.”
The Illinois team consisted of Rachel Dickson, Madisyn Glenn, Faustina Krysciak from Kendall County, and Julia Muschetto from Will County. The team's participation marked a return for Illinois 4-H after one member competed last year, with increased interest leading to the formation of a team.
The team competed in two events: Poultry Judging and Avian Bowl Contests. The Poultry Judging competition assessed skills such as decision-making, reasoning, communication, dish preparation, food safety, and knowledge of poultry species and nutrition. The Avian Bowl was a double elimination contest requiring comprehensive knowledge on various aspects of poultry.
Beyond competition skills, these national events also help youth develop life skills and explore careers in the poultry industry. “Youth learn life skills such as leadership skills, communication skills, problem solving, and decision making,” added Koelkebeck.
Financial backing for the team's participation came from the University of Illinois' Department of Animal Sciences, the State 4-H Office, and the Illinois 4-H Foundation.
