National 4-H Council has announced the recipients of the 2024 Youth In Action Awards, a program sponsored by Bayer. The awards recognize four young leaders who have positively impacted their communities. Among the winners is Avani Rai, a 17-year-old from McLean County 4-H, named as a 2024 Pillar Winner.
Each awardee will receive a $5,000 scholarship for higher education and will spend the year inspiring other youth by sharing their experiences with 4-H. They will also have opportunities to showcase their work nationally and network with notable 4-H alumni while serving as official spokespeople for Youth in Action.
The announcement coincided with National 4-H Week, which takes place from October 1-7, celebrating the opportunities and impact of 4-H programs nationwide.
Avani Rai's involvement began after observing food insecurity issues in her community. She joined the Food Advocacy Team, organizing healthy food drives and educational seminars. Her service expanded to promoting overall healthy living through initiatives like 'Super Yoga,' reaching over 1,300 children across local elementary schools. Avani has also contributed to discussions on food security at events such as the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health.
"The 2024 Youth in Action Awards honor four incredible young people," said Jill Bramble, President & CEO of National 4-H Council. "We are proud that Cooperative Extension’s 4-H programs have offered Katie, Amiyah, Reed, and Avani these opportunities to lead and tools to succeed."
The Youth in Action Awards began in 2010 to acknowledge young individuals who overcome challenges and use their knowledge from participating in 4-H to make lasting impacts in their communities.
