Counties throughout Illinois participated in the annual 4-H Can Make a Difference Food Drive during the Illinois State Fair from August 9 to 11. The event focused on collecting non-perishable food and care items to combat hunger in the state.

"In Illinois, over 1.5 million people face hunger, which translates into 1 in 8 people facing hunger or 1 in 6 children," said University of Illinois 4-H youth development specialist Katie Duitsman.

The initiative, which began more than two decades ago, encourages counties to collaborate for greater impact. Donations were gathered locally and transported to the fairgrounds.

During the three-day event, over 1000 items were collected. Counties engaged in a friendly competition to donate the most items. Ogle County, Macoupin County, and Will County emerged as the top contributors. These counties will receive funds for local community service projects for the upcoming year.

"This food drive showcases the incredible impact that young people can have when given the opportunity to lead," said Duitsman. "Their dedication to fighting hunger in their communities is inspiring and makes a real difference for families across Illinois."

The event is led by youth through the Illinois 4-H Youth Leadership Team and marks their second year organizing it.

"Our youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow – they are driving change today," added Duitsman. "Through efforts like this, they’re learning the value of service, collaboration, and making a lasting impact on the world around them."

Plans are already underway for next year's event at the State Fair in summer 2025.

Illinois 4-H is part of University of Illinois Extension's flagship youth development program under its College of Agriculture, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences. The program aims to develop true leaders who are prepared for life today and future careers by providing guidance and opportunities for hands-on learning experiences.
