Youth from across Illinois participated in the 4-H Hooks Us Together Virtual Fishing Channel Catfish Challenge in June. This event marked the conclusion of the spring contest, where young anglers showcased their fishing skills.
Participants submitted photos of their catches and could enter as many times as they wished. Hunter Stevens from Saline County secured first place with a 30-inch catch. Katelyn Clagg from Macoupin County and Isaiah Logue from Shelby County tied for second place with 28-inch catches, while Eli Zimmerman from Tazewell County took third place with a 27-inch catch.
The tournament aimed to encourage competition and provide an opportunity for youth to enjoy nature. "I think 4-H is fun," said Katelyn Clagg, one of the second-place winners. "I like going fishing with my dad and mom. I like catching all the big fish!"
The contest ran through April, May, and June, allowing participants statewide to submit pictures and data of crappie, largemouth bass, and channel catfish catches. Winners were determined based on the length of their catch.
Illinois 4-H is part of the University of Illinois Extension's flagship youth development program administered through the College of Agriculture, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences. The program aims to empower youth for life today and prepare them for future careers by providing guidance, tools, encouragement, and opportunities to make impactful contributions.
