Youth from across Illinois participated in the statewide 4-H Hooks Us Together Virtual Fishing Bass Challenge in May, embracing the outdoors for a unique experience.
While competition remains central to the event, it aims to ignite or deepen participants' passion for fishing. This initiative addresses a decline in fishing interest, evidenced by over 100,000 fewer fishing licenses sold now compared to two decades ago. The contest seeks to highlight the sport's benefits to younger generations.
Participants submitted photos of their catches' measurements and could enter multiple times virtually. Caleb Wenzel, 11, from Saline County secured first place with a 22-inch catch. Hunter Stevens, 15, also from Saline County, took second place with a 21-inch catch. Bryce Stevenson, 8, from Franklin County claimed third place with a 20.5-inch catch.
Bryce Stevenson's parents noted that the contest helped him explore his love for fishing and wildlife. "I love fishing because it is fun; I get to be outside and spend time with my dad and siblings," Bryce shared.
Though conducted virtually, the competition encourages youth to engage with nature through an enjoyable activity. The tournament runs from April to June, focusing on different fish species each month. In June, the spotlight will be on Channel Catfish. More information can be found on the competition website.
