Urbana, Ill. -- Young participants with a passion for horses recently showcased their knowledge in a statewide educational contest focused on the equine industry. The State Horse Bowl Contest, held on April 13 at the University of Illinois campus, tested the participants' understanding of horse health, breed characteristics, management, and feeding.

According to the University of Illinois Extension, the Horse Bowl competition is designed similar to a scholastic bowl, with a specific emphasis on equine knowledge. Notably, horse ownership is not a requirement for participation in either the educational programs or contests.

The event saw impressive performances from participants across different divisions. In the Junior Division, notable finishers included Moira Curry, Hanna Koch, Addison Yordy, and others. Meanwhile, top performers in the Senior Division included Ellis Rogers, Anna Hessell, and Michaela Persico, among others.

Additionally, the Mercer County team clinched the top spot in the Junior Division Horse Bowl Teams, while the Rock Island/Henry County team emerged victorious in the Senior Division. The competition also featured Hippology and Horse Speaking state contests alongside the Horse Bowl.

Highlighting the significance of the 4-H program, it was stated that Illinois 4-H, facilitated by the University of Illinois Extension, aims to develop young leaders who are prepared for both present challenges and future careers. The hands-on approach of 4-H provides youth with the necessary guidance, tools, and encouragement to take charge and create positive impacts.

Deb Hagstrom, a University of Illinois Extension Specialist, emphasized the transformative impact of the 4-H experience, citing research findings that showcase the increased likelihood of 4-H participants contributing to their communities, making healthier choices, engaging in civic activities, and participating in STEM programs.
