Shooting Investigation Underway in Champaign

Champaign Police were called to the 900 block of S. Mattis Avenue on January 7, 2024, following a report of shots fired and potential injuries. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 27-year-old man from Gary, Indiana, who had been transported to a local hospital with multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. The victim remains in critical condition.

According to the initial investigation, the victim was outside an apartment building when an unknown individual approached him. After a brief interaction, the suspect produced a firearm and fired multiple shots, striking the victim. The suspect then fled the scene on foot and has not yet been apprehended. Additionally, one of the gunshots also hit a nearby building.

In response to the incident, Champaign Police are actively canvassing the surrounding area for witnesses and surveillance footage that may aid in the investigation. They are urging residents and businesses with exterior surveillance cameras to come forward and provide any relevant information to the police department.

No arrests have been made thus far, and the investigation is ongoing. The police department will provide updates as they become available.

It is important to note that information shared with Crime Stoppers is completely anonymous. Calls are directed to a third-party national call center, which receives the information and passes it on to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards of up to $5,000 for tips leading to an arrest in homicide cases, $2,500 for tips related to felony crimes involving firearms, and up to $1,000 for tips leading to the arrest of individuals responsible for other crimes.

As the investigation into this shooting continues, Champaign Police are urging the community to come forward with any pertinent information that could help bring the suspect to justice and ensure the safety of the neighborhood.
