Redbirds Named ITA All-Academic Team; Six Players Honored

The Illinois State women's tennis team has earned 2022 Division I Women's All-Academic Team honors from The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and six Redbirds were named ITA Scholar-Athletes on Monday by the organization. 

Academics are an integral aspect of the college tennis experience and adds to the unique student-athlete experience found on college campuses across the nation. Within the sport of tennis, student-athletes continue to exceed expectations in the classroom and on the court. In 2022, a total of 1,517 Division I Women's student-athletes were named an ITA Scholar-Athletes and 250 women's tennis programs were awarded the All-Academic Team distinction.

The Redbirds led all Illinois State programs this past spring a 3.77 team grade point average. ISU made its fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament, after winning the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title over Drake to earn the league's automatic berth. The Redbirds were led by MVC all-conference singles selections Tijana Zlatanovic, Maria Potsi and Penelope Abreu and featured a pair of All-MVC doubles teams.

To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, as student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year and be listed on the institutional eligibility form. A total of six Redbirds met the annual criteria, including Zlatanovic, Potsi, Alexandra Abyasova, Othilia Brodin, Tara Damnjanovic and Elena Jankulovska.
