The Edgar County Watchdogs group is urging everyone “to read the full reports from both the ISP and the Urbana Police Department, watch the video, and draw their own conclusion about the actions of State Rep. Carol Ammons' alleged theft of a purse.”
While a special prosecutor earlier determined there was “insufficient evidence” to criminally charge Ammons (D-Urbana) in connection with the incident that took place in January 2020, questions have arisen anew since the video was made public.
"Ammons is observed reaching her right hand into the purse,” Edgar Watchdogs posted on its website. “A few seconds later Ammons steps away from the rack and a white object appears on the floor near Ammons' feet. It should be noted this white object was not on the floor when Ammons walked to the rack."
The video was only made public after the Illinois State Police and the City of Urbana were sued under the Freedom of Information Act. Initially, Ammons’ name was redacted from all records related to the incident.
The alleged theft occurred on Jan. 7, 2020 at the Carle Auxiliary Resale Boutique and is said to involve a black Coach purse worth an estimated $80. Operating as a charity to raise money for Carle nursing scholarships, the boutique also accepts donations.
Ammons, who has been representing the 103rd Illinois House District since 2014, has since claimed she “accidentally” walked out of the store with merchandise that was not paid for.
