City of Hoopeston Historic Preservation Commission Historical Sub-Committee Met March 23.
Here is the minutes provided by the sub-committee:
I. Meeting was called to order at 5:38pm, Hoopeston City Hall, council chamber.
II. Roll Call – 2 members present: Chairperson Kristy Kelnhofer, Secretary Marta Pierce. 6 guests in attendance.
III. Historical Events: - Downtown Walking History Tour – Tom Sweeney & Marilyn Tyler will present on April 26th & May 3rd at 10:00am & 1pm and on June 21st at 5:30pm. Each tour will be limited to 20 people. The Hoopeston Public Library will sponsor this event, but they will not take reservations and there can be no handouts to go along with tour. Tom on behalf of Tricia stated that if we (HPC) ask for donations, Tricia wants it to be clear there is no connection to the Hoopeston Public Library. Tom suggested we advertise with WHPO Radio. Plus, the Chronicle, a photo advertisement “What is this Artifact?”. Historic Church Tour – A self-guided tour on Wednesday, June 30th. Judy Doeden stated that she has heard from all but 2 churches. If anyone knows who to contact for the Cowboy Church or the Apostolic Church, please pass along the information. Would like for each church to have a large red, white and blue bow on the doors so the people attending the walk will know what churches are participating. Also, there will be a representative at each church during the hours of 1pm – 3pm. History Displays –Kristy and Nora would like to start putting window displays together by the end of April. Sandy Smith was suggested. Her business downtown it decorated with Hoopeston photos/items. Kristy asked if she would be willing to put items in her window. Kristy would also like a few volunteers to help with displays. Cemetery Walking Tour: Some title changes. Dates are set for June 5th, 10:00am Who’s Who of Early Hoopeston. The 3pm tour-Hoopeston Patriots. On June 12th, the tour at 10am, Women of Hoopeston. At 3pm, Unforgettable Lore. Each tour will be 1hour to 1hr 15 minutes. We will set out an honor jar for people who would like to donate. VIDEO: Jerry discussed the project with Tim Walsh at HAHS. They talked about filming the tour portion of cemetery walks first, then do a voice over of the program. This could make a better video for people to view. Tom & Marilyn think this would involve too many hours. Feels it would take months, and if someone else read it, they would have to write a script. The volunteer time would increase. Tom suggests taping all events and then editing them all together for a celebration video. Welcome Center: Hours open would co-ordinate with events. Will start on the Saturday before our 1st event on April 26th. Distribute flyers, have souvenirs available for sale. Back drop displays from the High School for photo displays. Tom suggested coloring books of historical places, logos, buildings. He had done this with Maple School.
Then & Now Booklet: Marilyn has started putting it together.
IV. Kristy announced next Historical Sub-Committee meeting will be Thursday, April 8th at 5:30pm, council chambers. Meeting adjourned at 6:42pm.
