A recent Bristol Place Phase II Steering Committee meeting allowed the committee, Neighborhood Services Advisory Board member and Douglas Park/Beardsley Park leaders to learn more about developments in the project from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and project developer AHDVS LLC.
A UIUC team, lead by professor Klara Nahrstedt, has put together a grant application for $5 million in funding from the National Science Foundation to make Bristol Place a smart and connected community. The funding would cover installation of smart infrastructure, cybersecurity education and training for local residents and creating online and physical public safe spaces. The university expects to learn about any grant award in approximately six months. Meeting attendees were able to provide input and ask questions about the project, including a push to install more security cameras in the community and to ensure that data collected by those cameras would be secure.
The meeting also included a presentation from the Bristol Place Phase II project’s master developer, AHDVS. The steering committee was able to garner more information about from the development team about its vision for the community, including job training for residents, returning residents who have been displaced and improvements to crime and safety.
