The city of Urbana recently released an update on the Multimodal Corridor Enhancement (MCORE) project, which will improve mobility in the area through enhanced infrastructure.

Projects 1, 2 and 3 are slated to commence in early March.

The $44 million project is managed cooperatively by the cities of Champaign and Urbana, in addition to the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It will make the campus and surrounding areas more accessible for all forms of transportation, including a new transit boarding island, bicycle lanes and all-way pedestrian crossings, among others.

Duce Construction Company won contracts for Projects 1, 2 and 3, which cover construction on Green, White and Wright Street. The company plans to begin those projects in the beginning of March. That construction will entail significant effects on traffic moving through the area.

Prior to the construction work beginning, the city will post message boards to notify the public; drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are urged to move through the work sites with caution, obeying all traffic control signs and devices. The construction will also affect bus routes through the area, which will be rerouted as necessary, including temporary relocations of some bus stops.
