The National General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the YMCA in Sierra Leone, Christian Kamara, met with Champaign’s city staff during his weeklong visit.

He was in Champaign to explore and organize collaborations for The University YMCA. He was especially interested in citizen outreach efforts with Susan Schnuer, associate director of the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs at the University Library, which provides librarians training to work in developing and transitional countries.

Community awareness and involvement have been the cornerstones of Kamara’s work. He first stepped into the world of community awareness when he provided leadership training and civic education, including HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, to youth groups. He was instrumental in getting youth to be allowed to participate in Sierra Leone’s government as well as working with citizens on prevention and treatment of Ebola.
